Human-machine interaction (HMI) is a field that covers software and hardware components that allow users to interact with machines. It encompasses a broad range of applications in both professional and personal settings. In this article, we’ll explore the human-machine interaction definition, use cases, aspects, trends, and more.
The study of HMI was born as the demand for more user-friendly computer interfaces became evident. It blends elements from different disciplines, such as psychology, ergonomics, and cognitive engineering. Douglas Engelbart coined the term, believing that humans could be taught to operate computers through well-designed www.hive-eu.org/understanding-human-machine-interaction/ interfaces.
An example of human-machine interaction is an HMI terminal or operator interface terminal (OIT) which is also known as an operator interface local (LOI) or man machine interface(MMI). These devices communicate with PLCs in automation systems, process and translate input and output data into digital dashboards and facilitate control. They also manage and display alarms by using real-time data. HMIs are found in ATMs, gas stations self-checkout lines, and manufacturing facilities.
Another kind of HMI is a touchscreen screen which detects and interprets user’s gestures, and then executes commands accordingly. Such technology can be seen on tablets and smartphones that have built-in touchscreens that have become an integral part of every day life. Some recent developments in the field of human-machine interaction include pre-touch sensing that anticipates a user’s intent and performs the action before the user even gives the command.
